Pull a breaker out of a panel and there is more printed on it than the amp rating everyone recognises. Most of those markings exist because the breaker has to match the panel, the conductor and the fault current available at that address, and getting any of them wrong changes how the device behaves in an emergency.



The large number on the handle is the continuous current rating. Fifteen and twenty amps cover general lighting and receptacle circuits, thirty is typical for a dryer or water heater, forty to fifty for a range or an EV charger. That number is matched to the wire, not the appliance. A twenty-amp breaker protecting fourteen-gauge wire is a fire waiting for a busy afternoon.



Below it sits the voltage rating, usually 120/240V for residential. A single-pole breaker occupies one bus position and sees 120 volts. A double-pole spans both legs and sees 240. The rating printed on the device tells you which service it was tested for.



The interrupting rating is the number most people never look at. It is expressed in amperes, commonly 10,000 for standard residential breakers, and it describes how much fault current the breaker can safely stop without damaging itself. Houses close to a large utility transformer can see more available fault current than that, which is why some panels require higher-rated devices.



Then come the classification letters. HACR indicates the breaker was tested for heating, air conditioning and refrigeration equipment with motor loads. CTL relates to how many circuits the panel is permitted to hold, which is why tandem breakers only work in specific slots. SWD means the device is rated for switching duty, relevant when a breaker is used to turn lighting on and off rather than just for protection.



None of this shows up while the house is running normally. It shows up in the half second when something shorts, and the breaker either does its job cleanly or does not. That is the argument for matching the manufacturer and series the panel was listed for rather than whatever fits the bus.



A used breaker pulled from another panel is a poor economy for the same reasons. There is no way to tell by looking whether it has already interrupted a heavy fault, and a device that has done that once may not perform to its rating a second time. The markings describe what it was built to do, not what it has been through.
